Mercury isotopes of key tissues document mercury metabolic processes in seabirds

چکیده
Seabirds accumulate significant amounts of mercury (Hg) due to their long-life span together with medium high trophic position in marine food webs. Hg speciation and isotopic analyses total different tissues (pectoral muscles, liver, brain, kidneys, blood feathers) were assessed investigate detoxification mechanisms. Three species contrasted ecological characteristics studied: the Antarctic prion (zooplankton feeder), white-chinned petrel (pelagic generalist consumer) southern giant (scavenger on seabirds mammals). The difference mass-dependent fractionation (MDF, ?202Hg) values between liver muscles (up 0.94 ‰) all three strongly suggests hepatic demethylation isotopically lighter methylmercury (MeHg) subsequent redistribution heavier fraction MeHg towards muscles. Similarly, higher ?202Hg feathers 1.88 relative proportion (94–97%) than (30–70%) likely indicate potential muscle preferential excretion (isotopically heavier) growing during moult. extents these key processes dependent species-specific strategies levels dietary exposure. We also found mass-independent (MIF, ?199Hg) internal tissues, possibly integration times exposure permanently active organs inert as feathers. isotope variations reported this study show evidence propose a powerful approach for deep investigation metabolic seabirds.

Mercury Isotopes as Proxies to Identify Sources and Environmental Impacts of Mercury in Sphalerites
During the past few years, evidence of mass independent fractionation (MIF) for mercury (Hg) isotopes have been reported in the Earth's surface reservoirs, mainly assumed to be formed during photochemical processes. However, the magnitude of Hg-MIF in interior pools of the crust is largely unknown. Here, we reported significant variation in Hg-MIF signature (Δ(199)Hg: -0.24 ~ + 0.18‰) in sphale...
متن کاملLinking mercury, carbon, and nitrogen stable isotopes in Tibetan biota: Implications for using mercury stable isotopes as source tracers
Tibetan Plateau is located at a mountain region isolated from direct anthropogenic sources. Mercury concentrations and stable isotopes of carbon, nitrogen, and mercury were analyzed in sediment and biota for Nam Co and Yamdrok Lake. Biotic mercury concentrations and high food web magnification factors suggested that Tibetan Plateau is no longer a pristine site. The primary source of methylmercu...
متن کاملMercury methylation in estuaries: Insights from using measuring rates using stable mercury isotopes
Rates of mercury (Hg) methylation and methylmercury (MeHg) demethylation in sediment of the Hudson River, Chesapeake Bay and Bay of Fundy were measured using stable isotopes of mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg). Methylation of the isotope correlated well with in situ MeHg concentration, and MeHg turnover times were on the order of days. It was concluded that methylation was more important t...
متن کاملConcentration of Mercury in Selected Tissues of the Caspian Lamprey (Caspiomyzon wagneri) Migrants in Spawning Season
Background: Mercury (Hg) is considered a global pollutant because Hg0 which is the predominant form of atmospheric Hg resides in the atmosphere for as long as 0.5 to 2 years. Mercury has many negative effects on the reproductive, respiratory, and immune systems. Methods: In this study, 24 Caspian lampreys (Caspiomyzon wagneri) were transported to the university laboratory and then stored in ...
متن کاملConcentration of isotopes of mercury in countercurrent molecular stills.
Mercury was refluxed in countercurrent molecular stills in order to concentrate 204Hg. Two glass sti lls , with heater and cooler placed outside the distillation columns, and one still, consisting of a glass column heated externally and a stainless-steel cooler placed concentrically inside the column, were used . As compared with a lO-cell steel column described previously, these columns showed...
